MBS Houston Retirees

Our Retirees

At this year’s Service Awards Dinner in September, Marek was privileged to honor five long time faithful employees that have decided to make 2010 their last year of service to the company. Here is a little information about our retirees.

Wilson Chambers is one of the five retirees. In January after 39 ½ years, Wilson retired with Marek. Wilson worked as a great stocking foreman and worked on more jobs than we could possibly count. Wilson ran a tight ship for many years and everyone wanted Wilson on their job. Although we’re happy for him, we are also sad to see him go.

Louise Davenport retired in March 2010 after 36 years with Marek. Louise worked as Mike Holland’s Secretary and was a great asset to the company. Louise has still been very helpful after her leave; she will occasionally offer her help on big company events. We wish her a long and wonderful retirement with her husband, Charlie, and the rest of her family.

Ben Boatright retired in May after 18 years (the second time around). When Marek had a need to fill the paint superintendent position, Ben was working for another company. We asked Ben, to come back and take over the paint department. Thank goodness he accepted and did a great job for the next 18 years until he retired to go fishing every day.

Steve Moore better known as Moe, retired in July of this year. Thirty one years ago, Moe showed up for work here as a stocker and nobody thought he could even lift a sheet of rock, much less stock entire buildings. Moe proved everybody wrong when he quickly established himself as one the hardest working employees Marek has ever had. Not only did Moe work hard – Moe knew how to work smart, which earned him the title of ‘superintendent’ – the position he held until he retired.

Nick Nunez retired in September and he started working with Marek 45 years ago in Austin Texas working with Shelly Stapleton at Tre-Cor. Nick has built a little bit of everything; he has worked on too many jobs to mention but Nick was last working at TCH Maternity Hospital before he retired. Nick has brought a lot of good things to the company; he was a real mentor for everyone in the field. He is now looking forward to spending more time with his wife Ninfa, his 8 kids and his grandchildren.

In behalf of all of those who knew and even worked alongside these employees, I can honestly say they will be missed and their loyalty and service to the company will not be forgotten. We wish them many blessings and hope that their future plans and dreams are fulfilled.

MBS Receives Business Excellence Awards

The awards ceremony was held on Thursday October 21, 2010 and boasted prominent leaders in our local construction industry. MBS Houston received the Business Excellence award (1st place) for Specialty Contractor, and 2nd runner up award for Best of Business-Houston overall. We are honored to receive this award, and are fortunate to work for a leading company in the construction industry.

Marek Receives NCCER Accreditation

Houston, TX. Marek Companies recently became an NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor.

NCCER Accredited Training Sponsors are entities that have been approved by NCCER as having the resources to effectively conduct a quality training program that utilizes the Contren® Learning Series standardized curriculum.

“We are extremely proud of this achievement. This accreditation speaks volumes about the quality and effectiveness of our Workforce initiative, launched nearly three years ago. The first step was to build a culture of training/development at Marek, then to certify (generically) the process, and finally, to promote industry awareness and utilization of the curriculum and certification process by all in our trade/industry.” said Mike Holland, Houston Division President, Houston, TX.

NCCER’s accreditation process is the benchmark for quality training and assessments. Its process assures that students and craft professionals receive quality training based on uniform standards and criteria. These standards are outlined in the NCCER Accreditation Guidelines and must be adhered to by all NCCER Accredited Training Sponsors and Accredited Assessment Centers.

NCCER credentials allow for nationally recognized and portable skill certification. Benefits of utilizing the NCCER standardized training process are increased productivity, reduced accidents along with more cost-effective construction, maintenance, and pipeline operations.
